Purpose & perspective

Artist’s View

My mission is to inspire and educate—to create work that rewards curiosity and invites a closer look.

Working across art, photography, and graphic design, I approach each image as both a composition and a conversation. My experience in photojournalism has taught me to observe carefully; my work as an educator has taught me that the most compelling discoveries often begin with a question. I bring that spirit to my practice, creating space for viewers to notice, interpret, and arrive at something of their own.

My design philosophy is detailed and minimalistic. Every element earns its place, and what I leave out matters as much as what remains. I am drawn to precise compositions, thoughtful contrast, and the expressive possibilities of negative space. Even an empty space should have something to say.

Through Blackisgood, I want to make art that holds attention beyond the first glance. A work may begin with visual appeal, but my hope is that it leaves behind a fresh perspective, an unexpected connection, or a question worth carrying home.

About the Artist

For Shelton Sherrill, an image is an opening—a chance to catch someone’s attention, stir their curiosity, and give them a reason to look again.

His creative path has moved through military storytelling, photography, graphic design, and the high school classroom. Across these settings, one question connects the work: how can a visual experience help someone understand something more deeply?

Working in military communications and photojournalism sharpened his attention to moments that carry a larger story. A gesture, a shift in light, or a carefully chosen frame can communicate what a paragraph struggles to explain. Creating photography and video for international audiences reinforced his respect for that power—and for the care it requires.

Teaching brought another dimension to his practice. Helping young artists turn tentative ideas into work worthy of national recognition made the relationship between inspiration and education tangible. Sometimes the most meaningful creative breakthrough belongs to the person you encouraged to keep going.

These experiences come together in Blackisgood. Shelton’s approach is detailed and minimalistic, balancing precision with room to breathe. Every element has a purpose; a composition need not raise its voice to hold a conversation.

Through his artwork and photography, Shelton invites viewers to pause, look closely, and trust their curiosity. His mission is to inspire and educate, with work that offers something to enjoy at first glance—and something to discover on the second.
